Secrets to Sticking with Your New Year’s Resolutions

  • Posted on: January 5, 2018

2018 is here! We know you’ve got a few New Year’s Resolutions in mind and ready to tackle, but how do you plan on actually sticking with them throughout the year? Don’t worry, we’ve got a few tips that can help:

  1. Start small. New Year’s resolutions aren’t designed to punish you, but help you! That’s why people make it a point to come up with a few every year. Decide on one small resolution to get things started. People who break their resolution into small, manageable chunks generally experience greater success than those who do not. Then, once you’re in the groove, increase expectations for your resolution, or add a new one!
  2. Make time. Yes, this is a tough one. Most of you may even have “finding time to do more” as one of your resolutions in 2018. However, you can’t “find time,” you choose it. Make your resolution a priority and literally schedule them into your phone or work calendar to send you reminders. When we schedule things, we tend to get them done. You know, like your annual doctor visit. We don’t enjoy going to the doctor, but we feel the need to get it done and over with because it’s what’s best.
  3. Share with loved ones. What better way to stick to your New Year’s resolutions than to share them with your family and friends and gain their support. Their love and encouragement can dramatically increase your odds of success. It’s certainly easy to break a promise to yourself, but very hard to admit it to your family and friends.
  4. Be patient. Remember the saying, “Good things come to those who wait?” Resolutions aren’t a walk in the park, that’s why people often abandon them. But, you don’t have to! You won’t see results instantly, but stay determined, give it 100%, and measure your progress over time. By following those steps, you are sure to see that wonderful light at the end of the tunnel.
  5. Measure progress, and success! In order to help you keep your resolutions going, and fresh in your mind, make it a point to log your progress. Tracking progress will motivate you to continue moving forward, as you’ll see how things were from when you first began to where you are now. Keep in mind: There’s nowhere to go but up!
  6. Keep moving. Don’t give up! It can be tempting to ditch your resolution when you hit a bump in the road. Don’t let excuses get in your way. Instead, acknowledge your mistake and learn from it. This will help you recommit to your resolution and continue moving forward.

We hope your year is off to a great start, and that these tips can help you establish and keep your New Year’s resolutions. As with any challenge you take on, stay focused and success will be sure to follow.
