USDA Lender of Excellence Award

Gainesville, GA, July 1, 2016– Gainesville-based direct mortgage lender Homestar Financial Corporation received a “Lender of Excellence” award on Thursday, June 30, 2016, as part of the USDA’s observance of National Homeownership Month.

USDA Rural Development’s Georgia State Director Jill Stuckey presented the award to Homestar President Wes Hunt at Homestar’s corporate headquarters in the Old Gym of ’36.  Homestar employees and division managers were in attendance of the ceremony, in addition to several members from the USDA including Single Family Housing Program Director Ed Peace, Guaranteed Loan Coordinator Melodie Brooks, Finance and Loan Analyst Ashley Carlan, and Single Family Housing Technician Kevin Armstrong.

“Homestar is named appropriately,” said Stuckey, upon presenting the award to Hunt. “They are truly a USDA shining star, and a wonderful partner with us. We are so honored to recognize Homestar with this award, and we can’t thank them enough for the work they do to help families find housing,” she continued.

The USDA Guaranteed Rural Housing program began in 1991 to help expand access to mortgage financing in rural areas, giving rural residents the chance to qualify for a no-down payment loan through the lender of their choice. Since 1991, more people have chosen Homestar than any other lender in Georgia. In the last year and a half, the USDA and Homestar have worked together to help over 650 low-and moderate-income families and individuals purchase homes in rural Georgia through the USDA’s Guaranteed Loan Program.

“The USDA program has been a catalyst for building Homestar into the company it is today,” said Hunt. “I can’t say enough how Homestar has benefitted from this program, and especially the families we were able to help get into homes that otherwise couldn’t during the difficult downturn in the economy,” he continued.

Homestar has closed over 6,000 loans through the USDA Rural Development program, and accounts for approximately 20 percent of the program’s loans.

"The ‘Lender of Excellence’ award honors the collaboration of the private and public sectors that can make the dream of homeownership a reality for families all across rural Georgia," said Stuckey.
